Spatial Instrument

The project is a research exploration looking at form and precision manufacturing as a means to inform architecture as ‘objects of knowledge’. Through the practice of Instrument making, the project looks to push what is possible in classical materials through digital fabrication and DfMA.

When connected to the ground, the tool hits the drum, which records the sonic output. In supporting this expedition ritual of sound, the instrument is lightweight, and the vessels are hollowed with a ribbed structure preventing warping.

A cast brass piece is embedded in the vessel, enhancing sonic output. The use of the Instrument becomes a performance as the entire events resonate within the mind, and on-lookers inevitably imagine the ritual. Site and geological research is undertaken to facilitate the enigmatic potential knowledge of the Instrument.
